Stranger Things x JanSport
I was the lead Art Director on this collab, I worked with my team and the team at Netflix to bring this final vision to fruition.
The Process
I was briefed on creating 4-6 concepts that employ some form of animation to stop the scroll, and that felt like they fit the collection. I wanted to make scenes that felt like natural settings where you might find the bags within the Stranger Things world - One example being Mike’s JanSport, which I set in his basement using props that felt right for the character and adding in ‘Vecna style’ animations to add interest. We shot all of these concepts in two parts, normal lighting and then red ‘Vecna’ lighting, I also had to source two sets of props to have a distressed version for the Vecna shot.
Mock ups —-> Final Art
Final Art
We shot half of these concepts with a very talent Photographer and half we shot in-house, with myself and my teammate doing the shooting. I worked on the majority of the set design, collaborating with team mates to cover part of it I didn’t have time to source. I also worked with my team to finish all the post-edits and the final global toolkit since we were on a tight turn-around.
Ecom Photography
In addition to key art, I also lead the ecom photography for this collab. I had a blast styling the models for this, we we’re asked to make sure the models looked like they lived in the Stranger Things world but didn’t resemble any of the show actors, and I think we nailed it. I also lead the post-edits on final selects.
Fun on set…
We had so much fun turning the studio into the upside down, and we were able to get a really nice final look without having to spend a ton of money (that’s mylar we’re laying on and we rigged with some box fans to flow like water).
